The materials accompanying this exhibition on social media try to be what Instagram has accustomed us to: a photo from an exotic vacation, with a full, almost natural smile.

Michał Algebra’s characters try very hard, although they are like a modern Sisyphus pushing his stone uphill. The artist writes in the text accompanying the exhibition Celebration of Defeat: “It is possible that the past, present and future exist simultaneously. If this is true, every existence loses the opportunity to transform its experience of life, and misfortune is somehow inevitable. I find this extremely outrageous. Don’t we all cling to life, believing in possible change?”

At the exhibition in the ESKAEM gallery, inspired by the personal story of his father, he combines images and objects to convey the atmosphere – on the one hand, transience, and on the other, undying hope for change. From photos from his parents’ vacations in the 90s, through the view from the terrace of the family home lost by his father in 2000, to the spiral of debt and bankruptcy. Dance allows us to endure.
